Summary: 12 March 2011, Brussels - Catherine Ashton, High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy and Vice President of the Commission, issued the following statement today on Yemen:
"I condemn the use of force by the Government this morning against the protesters in Sana'a and Yemen's main cities. I sincerely regret the loss of life and that many were injured.
I call on President Saleh to stand by his commitments announced on 10 March and immediately to take the necessary measures to ensure the protection of the demonstrators and uphold their right to assemble freely. The Government is accountable for the welfare and safety of its people.
Urgent, concrete and credible measures are now needed to meet the aspirations of the Yemeni people. I call on all Yemeni political actors to exercise restraint and embark on a meaningful and genuine dialogue process."
