New Head of Mission appointed for EUPOL Afghanistan

Summary: 10 July 2012, Brussels - Mr Karl Åke Roghe was today appointed Head of Mission for the EU police mission in Afghanistan (EUPOL Afghanistan). The decision was taken by the EU Political and Security Committee.

Mr Roghe, from Sweden, will take up his duties on 1 August 2012, with his mandate running until 31 May 2013. He will succeed Brigadier General Jukka Savolainen, who had been in the post since July 2010, and interim Head of Mission Geoffrey Cooper.  

EUPOL Afghanistan contributes to the establishment of sustainable and effective civilian policing under Afghan ownership and in accordance with international standards. With 350 international and 200 local staff, it monitors, mentors, advises and trains at the level of the Afghan Ministry of Interior, Afghan Ministry of Justice, Afghan Attorney General's Office, regions and provinces. The mandate of the mission currently runs until 31 May 2013.
