EUHR Solana met the Middle East Quartet Special Envoy for Gaza Disengagement Wolfensohn

Javier SOLANA, European Union High Representative for the Common Foreign and Security Policy (CFSP), had a working lunch today with James D. WOLFENSOHN, the Middle East Quartet Special Envoy for Disengagement.

At the end of their meeting, the EU High Representative and Mr. Wolfensohn addressed the media. Mr. Solana expressed his satisfaction that Mr. Wolfensohn, outgoing President of the World Bank, had accepted the appointment as Special Envoy for Gaza Disengagement to the Quartet for the Middle East Peace Process (EU, US, UN, Russia). He reiterated the EU undertaking to provide its political and practical support for the success of Wolfensohn's mission. He highlighted the EU's determination to support the parties to make progress in the implementation in the Peace Process and to achieve its objectives.

Mr. Wolfensohn informed the media he had come to Europe on a fact-finding mission and was to proceed to Paris where he is to meet with representatives of the international donor community on Friday 29th April. He will also attend the forthcoming Quartet Principals' meeting in Moscow, Russia, to be held on 9th May 2005.
