EU Commissioner Ferrero-Waldner on situation in Burma/Myanmar

Summary: 26 September 2007, Brussels - Statement by Commissioner for External Relations and European Neighbourhood Policy Benita Ferrero-Waldner on the situation in Burma/Myanmar:

"I am very concerned by reports about increased tension in Burma/Myanmar.

I firmly condemn the use of force by the Burmese authorities against peaceful demonstrators and urge the Burmese authorities to immediately stop any use of force.

I support the process started at the UN by having a discussion on the situation in Burma/Myanmar at the UN Security Council today - we need to mobilize Myanmar's immediate neighbours to join our call for restraint of the regime and for a genuine political dialogue, including full respect for human rights.

The EU and the US have agreed to consider further steps against the regime in Burma/Myanmar including sanctions if deemed necessary."
