EU Presidency Statement - United Nations Peacebuilding Commission: Organizational Committee

Summary: 7 January 2009, New York - Statement on behalf of the European Union by Mr. Karel KOMAREK, Minister Counsellor, Permanent Mission of the Czech Republic to the United Nations, at the meeting of the Organizational Committee of the Peacebuilding Commission

Mr. Chairman,
Ladies and Gentlemen,

I have the honour to take the floor on behalf of the countries of the European Union.

First of all, we would like to express our sincere thanks to Ambassador Takasu, the outgoing chair of the PBC, for his continued efforts. Thanks to him the work of the PBC made significant progress during the last 18 months. We congratulate the newly elected Chairperson Ambassador Heraldo Muńoz. We wish you, Excellency, the full success in your endeavour.

We would like to welcome new members of the Organizational Committee elected by the General Assembly, by ECOSOC and by Security Council.

We welcome the decision of the OC to confirm the Chairs of the Country specific configurations and the Chair of the Working Group on Lessons Learned. This decision is clear confirmation of their excellent work. On behalf of the EU countries, I take this opportunity to thank Ambassadors of the Netherlands, Brazil, Belgium, Sweden and El Salvador for their praiseworthy contribution and wish them full success in their future efforts. We would also like to thank Ambassador Johan Lovald for his valuable work as the first Chair of the Burundi configuration.

The EU regards the Peacebuilding Commission as a very important element of the security architecture of the United Nations. The theme of countries' stabilization is central to the thinking and priorities of the European Union. It comes, therefore, as no surprise that EU countries are very actively participating in the various PBC activities.

Mr. Chairman,

We are convinced that, under your leadership and in close cooperation with the Chairs of the country specific configurations and PBSO, the PBC will be able to achieve the high expectations of the Member States. We wish the PBC every success in creating viable and strong democracies advancing towards sustainable economic development. We can assure you of the continued all-embracing support of the EU countries.

Thank you, Mr. Chairman.
