
Sumario: 20 September 2010, New York - Committed to achieving the Millennium Development Goals, as well as effective multilateralism - with the UN at its heart - to tackle global challenges in the fields of development, peace and security, humanitarian crises, climate action, among others, the European Union (EU) will be well represented this week in High Level segments, meetings with world leaders, and ministerial contacts with key countries and regional groupings, as well as press and public events.
European Commission President José Manuel Barroso will participate in the MDG Summit, together with EU Development Commissioner Andris Piebalgs, and also in the High Level segment on Biodiversity with EU Environment Commissioner Janez Potocnik.
In addition to his UN meetings with Heads of State, President Barroso will speak at Columbia University's World Leaders Forum on 21 September 2010 and at the Council on Foreign Relations on 23 September, giving a speech entitled "Fostering Economic Recovery: EU Moves from Crisis Management to Reform Agenda".
EU Development Commissioner Piebalgs will host a high level luncheon side event on 20 September on "Domestic Resource Mobilisation: achieving development and the MDGs in a sustainable way" at the UN.
EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs Catherine Ashton will be in New York for the UNGA opening week to meet with important ministerial contacts, participate in meetings such as the Middle East Quartet and the High Level Meeting on Pakistan, and to chair EU Political Dialogue meetings with key countries and regional groupings, including the US, Russia, Japan, Iraq, the Rio Group, the GCC and others.
EU Climate Action Commissioner Connie Hedegaard will participate in the inaugural meeting of the High Level Panel on Global Sustainability. She will also pursue goals related to the international climate action talks, and take part in the UNGA session on the Mauritius Strategy for Sustainable Development of Small Island States, among others.
EU Humanitarian Aid and Crisis Response Commissioner Kristalina Georgieva will meet with her counterparts from UN agencies and important donor and recipient countries, like UNICEF Executive Director Anthony Lake and USAID Administrator Rajiv Shah.
