Sumario: 16 July 2011, Brussels - Catherine Ashton, the High Representative of the Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy and Vice-President of the Commission, made the following statement today on the admission of South Sudan to the United Nations:
"I warmly welcome the vote by acclamation in the UN General Assembly to admit South Sudan as the 193rd member of the United Nations. As I said in Juba on Independence Day on 9 July, it is a great honour to be able to celebrate the birth of this new nation.
The EU will assist South Sudan in meeting the many challenges and looks forward to further strengthening of our relations. As the people of South Sudan embark on the task of building their new state, the EU reaffirms its long-term partnership to help them fulfil their aspirations for a democratic, peaceful, and prosperous nation.
I congratulate the people of South Sudan on their new state joining the community of nations."
