Sumario: 1 June 2012, Brussels - The spokesperson of Catherine Ashton, High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy and Vice President of the Commission, issued the following statement today on the lifting of the state of emergency in Egypt:
"The EU welcomes the expiration of the state of emergency in Egypt. As Egypt prepares for the second round of the Presidential elections and the transfer of power to civilian rule, this is an essential step in meeting the demands and aspirations of the Egyptian people in the ongoing democratic transition. It should contribute significantly to the protection of fundamental human rights for all citizens."
