Sumario: Ukraine: EUHR Solana welcomes the agreement to hold early parliamentary elections (4 May 2007: Brussels)
Javier SOLANA, EU High Representative for the Common Foreign and Security Policy (CFSP) welcomed the agreement reached by President Viktor Yushchenko and Prime Minister Viktor Yanukovych to hold early parliamentary elections in Ukraine and made the following statement:
"I warmly welcome the fact that President Viktor Yushchenko and Prime Minister Viktor Yanukovych have reached an agreement to hold early parliamentary elections in Ukraine. This agreement paves the way for a solution to the country's political crisis. I commend the commitment of both leaders to ensuring that these elections will be free and fair.
I encourage the working group of key Ukrainian political leaders to agree on the steps needed to implement today's agreement. A rapid agreement would confirm the strength of political dialogue and democracy, as well as the commitment of Ukraine's leaders to work for the benefit of the population.
Ukraine is a key country for Europe and a close partner for the European Union. Democracy and reforms are of crucial importance for the quality of this deepening partnership."
