
Sumario: 12 August 2009, Brussels - Declaration by the Presidency on behalf of the European Union on the Maputo Political Accord on Madagascar
The European Union welcomes the outcome on 9 August 2009 of the Maputo Summit on Madagascar between the four political movements under the mediation of the Joint Mediation Team to Madagascar, including the African Union, the Southern African Development Community, the United Nations and the International Organisation of La Francophonie.
The European Union encourages the four political movements to continue building on the Maputo consensus to ensure prompt implementation of a neutral, peaceful and consensual transition process leading to transparent elections and the restoration of constitutional order in Madagascar.
The European Union continues to support the Joint Mediation Team to Madagascar in its continued efforts to promote peace, democratic stability and prosperity in Madagascar.
The Candidate Countries Turkey, Croatia* and the former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia*, the Countries of the Stabilisation and Association Process and potential candidates Albania, Montenegro and the EFTA countries Iceland, Liechtenstein and Norway, members of the European Economic Area, as well as the Republic of Moldova, Armenia and Georgia align themselves with this declaration.
* Croatia and the former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia continue to be part of the Stabilisation and Association Process.
