EU Statement and Questions - United Nations 3rd Committee: Statement by UNICEF Executive Director Lake

Sommaire: 13 October 2010, New York - European Union Statement and Questions, United Nations Third Committee: Introductory Statement by Executive Director of UNICEF, Mr. Anthony Lake

Thank you Mr Chair.

Mr Chair, on behalf of the European Union, I would like to warmly congratulate Mr Anthony Lake on his appointment as Executive Director of UNICEF. We wish him all the best and we want to assure him of our support and our close collaboration.

We thank him for presenting here today the Secretary-General's report on the follow-up on the Special Session of the General Assembly on Children.

The EU also wants to express its support for the initiative to promote the achievement of the Millennium Development Goals with equity and we would like to take this opportunity to ask you, Mr. Lake, if you could inform us whether this initiative accords special attention to children in early childhood, as this is the focus theme of the resolution on the Rights of the Child this year.

The EU also wants to take this opportunity to cordially invite all delegations to the side event on implementing child rights in early childhood, organized by the Missions of Barbados, Belgium, Uruguay and the Delegation of the European Union to the UN, which will be held tonight, at 6.30 pm at the UNICEF House.

I thank you, Mr. President.
