
Sommaire: 24 March 2011, Brussels - The European Parliament sent a message of solidarity on Thursday to the Japanese people and their government following the devastating earthquake, the tsunami and the nuclear accident. Members of the European Parliament (MEPs) also called on the EU and its Member States to give all necessary assistance and support to Japan.
In a resolution tabled jointly by all the political groups and approved by show of hands, Parliament expresses support for the Japanese people and their government, following the "devastating earthquake and tsunami" and the "extremely serious nuclear accident", which it says "constitutes a fresh threat". MEPs also express admiration for the courage and determination of the Japanese people and authorities in dealing with the situation.
EU assistance to Japan
The resolution calls on EU and its Member States to give Japan and the regions affected all necessary humanitarian, technical and financial support and welcomes the fact that the Union immediately activated the Civil Protection Mechanism to coordinate its emergency assistance.
