Coordination, programme and other questions: reports of coordination bodies (New York)
Mr Chairman,
Allow me to address you on behalf of the European Union. The Central and Eastern European Countries associated with the European Union Bulgaria, the Czech Republic, Estonia, Hungary, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia, and the associated countries Cyprus, Malta and Turkey align themselves with this statement.
The European Union looks forward to stepping up the dialogue between ECOSOC and the United Nations Chief Executive Board for Coordination. We appreciate institutions' support for the work of ECOSOC functional commissions. Interaction between the CEB and ECOSOC is essential if the latter is to play its part in the coordination of the various funds, programmes and specialised agencies.
The European Union puts emphasis on strengthened UN coordination and welcomes the reform of the CEB. The Union therefore would be very interested to hear executive heads' views as to the experience from the first year of working within the new format. In that regard your comments on the work of the High-Level Committee on Programmes and the High-Level Committee on Management would be appreciated.
The European Union is aware that preparing for and following up major conferences increases the need for coordination in order to achieve the ambitious goals set by the international community and thus raises Member States' expectations of the various coordination arrangements. It welcomes the CEB's focus on the contribution of the system to a comprehensive and effective follow up of the Millennium Declaration and the contributions made by various bodies to preparations for the International
Conference on Financing for Development.
The Union would also like to know executive heads' views on how to support the Millennium Campaign and implementation of MDGs at country level and on coordinated implementation of the HIV/AIDS declaration of commitments. Another issue of EU interest is coordination regarding oceans and seas. In view of the upcoming World Summit on Sustainable Development the EU is particularly interested to know executive heads' views on supporting the preparations for the WSSD and CEB's role in supporting the
follow up to the Summit.
We hope that these aspects can be reflected in the report to next year's ECOSOC.
The European Union is pleased to see that the security of humanitarian staff remains one of the CEB's priorities, a priority which the Union endorses. As it does every year, it will be tabling a draft resolution on the subject at the General Assembly.
