EUHR Solana urges the Congolese parties to resolve their differences through dialogue

Sommaire: EUHR Solana urges the Congolese parties to resolve their differences through dialogue (23 March 2007: Brussels)

Javier SOLANA, EU High Representative for the Common Foreign and Security Policy (CFSP), is following with serious concern the developments in Kinshasa where major armed clashes are taking place. He issued the following statement calling on the parties in Kinshasa to settle their differences through dialogue:

"I am following with grave concern the violent clashes that are taking place in Kinshasa. I call on the Congolese parties to show maximum restraint. They must at all costs ensure that the fighting does not spill over and harm the civilian population.

I urge the Congolese parties to settle their differences through dialogue, in a spirit of tolerance and compromise. The international community and the European Union, in particular, will not allow democracy in the Democratic Republic of Congo, a major success for the entire African continent, to be compromised."
