Sommaire: 1 February 2009, Brussels - Javier SOLANA, EU High Representative for the Common Foreign and Security Policy (CFSP), made the following comments after the agreement reached for a Government of National Unity in Zimbabwe:
"I welcome the agreement reached by the Zimbabwean parties, in particular to establish the Government of National Unity.
I call on all parties to comply in good faith with the agreement reached. Only in the context of an equitable political solution, the plight of the Zimbabwean people can be alleviated. I commend SADC and its facilitator former president Thabo Mbeki for the results achieved.
The new Government of National Unity will be judged by its actions. The EU remains committed to help the Zimbabwean people in addressing their most basis economic and social needs."
