EU Parliament President Buzek to speak at Columbia University on "After Lisbon: a Strengthened EU Parliament in the Transatlantic Partnership"

President Buzek will address the European Parliament's expanded role after the Lisbon Treaty and what this means in terms of transatlantic relations.

Jerzy Buzek has been the President of the European Parliament since July 14th, 2009, after having won the largest majority of any European Parliament President since the first direct elections in 1979. First elected as a Member of the European Parliament from Poland in 2004, Mr. Buzek's roles have included serving as the Vice-President of the European Energy Forum and representing the European Parliament during the elections in Ukraine, supporting the Orange Revolution. Mr. Buzek was the Prime Minister of Poland from 1997 until 2001, during which time he brought Poland into NATO and negotiated the terms of Poland's accession to the European Union. In addition to politics, Mr. Buzek's career spans chemical engineering, human rights and environmental activism, and education.
